Retaking Your Exam

When you are ready to retake your exam, you will need to reapply to retake your exam. Once you have purchased and scheduled your exam, your next step will be to prepare for your retake.

These exams must be purchased through RID Member Portal after the requisite waiting period.

  • CDI-Knowledge Exam (six months waiting period for retake) (No longer available to take after December 31, 2020)
  • NIC-Knowledge Exam (three months waiting period for retake) (No longer available to take after December 31, 2020)

Request an exam after the waiting period has ended (CASLI Staff will manually verify eligibility) and purchase through the CASLI Exam System if you are taking the:

  • CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam (three months waiting period for retake)
    • Fundamentals of Interpreting (three months waiting period for retake)
    • Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies (three months waiting period for retake)
  • Gap test (three months waiting period for retake)
  • CASLI Generalist Performance Exam (six months waiting period for retake)
  • NIC-Interview and Performance Exam (six months waiting period for retake)
  • NIC-Performance Exam (six months waiting period for retake)

Note: The required waiting period ONLY APPLIES to retaking the same exam. E.g. If you took and failed your NIC-Knowledge exam and are retaking the NIC-Knowledge exam, there is required waiting period. If you took and failed your NIC-Knowledge exam and are next taking the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam, there is no required waiting period as these are different exams. The purpose of the required waiting period is to assure that your knowledge, skills, and abilities are being assessed, and not your capacity to memorize exam content.

Another Note: In regards to ONLY the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam, if you fail one part of the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam but pass the other, you only need to retake the part you failed. (E.g. if you passed the Fundamentals of Interpreting Multiple-Choice Questions part, but failed the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies, you only need to apply for, pay for and retake the Case Studies exam). There is still a three-month required waiting period, which begins from the date you originally took the exam, before you are eligible for your retake.  *This is only applicable to the CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exam – Fundamentals of Interpreting and Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Responsiveness Case Studies.
