A typical testing process cycle, which begins from the date you were notified to passed your knowledge exam* and ends when you have passed your performance exam, is five (5) years.

*The CASLI Generalist Knowledge Exams are composed of two separately scored exams (the Fundamentals of Interpreting Multiple Choice Questions and the Ethical Decision Making and Cultural Competency Case Studies) that are initially administered together. Your TPC will begin when you pass one or both of these exams. You still must pass both of these exams to be eligible to take your performance exam.

Granted, the past few years of RID and CASLI exam administration have not been typical. CASLI has made adjustments to individuals impacted by exam moratoriums, by exam delivery transitions, and by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Candidates impacted by the Moratorium of 2016*:

CDI candidates who took and passed their CDI-knowledge exam prior to or during the Moratorium of 2016: Their TPC is suspended until the release of the CASLI Generalist Performance Exam for Deaf Interpreters and the CASLI Exam System is fully operational (so determined when the CES network of LTAs reaches 50 operational test sites nationally). The exception to this is if a CDI candidate takes their Deaf Interpreter Performance Exam prior to CASLI Exam System becoming fully operational (e.g. we have not yet achieved 50 operational test sites nationally), the day they take their performance exam, their TPC will start or will resume.

NIC candidates who took and passed their NIC-knowledge exam prior to or during the Moratorium of 2016: Administration of the NIC-Interview and Performance Exam was suspended for ten months and resumed on November 1, 2016. NIC candidates’ TPCs were extended up to ten (10) additional months. The time during the moratorium during which they were eligible to take their NIC-Interview and Performance exam but could not because of the moratorium was already added to their TPC.

*The moratorium on the CDI-Performance exam began on January 1, 2016. The moratorium on the NIC-interview and Performance Exam began on January 1, 2016 and was lifted on November 1, 2016.

Candidates impacted by the Testing Platform Transition of 2019:

For those who have passed the NIC knowledge exam, and are eligible to take the NIC performance exam, the time of transition between our previous contracted performance test delivery company (which ceased June 1, 2019) and when CASLI Exam System becomes fully operational (when the CES network of test sites reaches 50 operational test sites nationally) will be added to their exam cycle, up to one additional year of eligibility. The exception to this is if a NIC candidate takes their NIC-Interview and Performance Exam prior to CASLI Exam System becoming fully operational (e.g. we have not yet achieved 50 operational test sites nationally), the day they take their performance exam, their TPC will start or will resume.

For those whose test cycle expires during the transition when CASLI Exam System is yet not fully operational (CES has not yet achieved 50 operational test sites nationally): The time between June 1, 2019 and their expiration date (for illustrative purposes, supposing that is August 1, 2019 – two months) will be granted to their test cycle beginning on the date CASLI Exam System becomes fully operational (when the CES network of test sites reaches 50 operational test sites nationally). The exception to this is if a NIC candidate takes their NIC-Interview and Performance Exam prior to CASLI Exam System becoming fully operational, their TPC will resume.

Candidates impacted by COVID-19:

The time a candidate is eligible to take their performance exam but cannot due to test site closures because of COVID-19, will be granted up to one additional year beyond their TPC expiration date. The exception to this is if a candidate takes their performance exam prior to CASLI Exam System becoming fully operational (when we have achieved 50 open and operational test sites nationally), their TPC will start or resume.

Configuring your Testing Process Cycle Expiration Date:

Go to either your RID Member Portal to see your exam history (click on the purple button that says “view your exam history”) or if applicable, go to your CASLI Exam System Account and view “My Exams” to see when you passed your knowledge exam. This will give you a starting point to configure your Testing Process Cycle expiration date. For help with figuring our your exact TPC expiration date, email Testing@CASLI.org for help.

Expired Testing Process Cycles:

If your Testing Process Cycle has expired, you must begin the process again by taking and passing your knowledge exams.

CASLI does not grant Testing Process Cycle extensions for other reasons.
