Applying for the NIC Interview and Performance Exam

Candidates must satisfy the educational requirements set forth by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) before applying for the NIC Interview and Performance Exam.

Candidates must pass the NIC Knowledge Exam and have a minimum of a bachelor degree (any major) or an approved/updated Alternative Pathway to Eligibility application recorded in their RID/CASLI account. This applies to ALL NIC exam candidates, including those who already hold RID certification.

To review the RID educational requirements, please view the NIC Certification Process:

You can apply and pay for the NIC Interview and Performance Exam in one of two ways:

  1. Apply online by logging on to your RID account (or creating an account if you do not already have one) and clicking on “Purchase NIC Interview and Performance Exam” in the yellow tile titled “Certification Application Status.” Payment can be made with MasterCard or VISA.
  2. Complete and send a hard-copy application form with payment of appropriate fees and any necessary documentation to CASLI Headquarters.

*Your RID account must show that you meet RID’s educational requirement before you are able to register and make payment for the exam. When you log in to your CASLI account, the yellow tile will show “Bachelor’s Degree Reviewed & Approved.” If the word after this phrase is “Completed” then your account has been marked as eligible. If the word after this phrase is “Pending” then you need to submit proof to the Certification Department that you meet the educational requirement.

*If it has been less than your six (6)-month waiting period then you will not see the option to purchase a NIC Interview and Performance Retake Exam on the member portal. The six (6)-month waiting period begins from the date you originally took the Exam; this is regardless of when you received your exam results. You will not be able to purchase the retake exam online until the 6 months has passed.

An Authorization to Test (ATT) Letter is required prior to taking the NIC Interview and Performance Exam. You must show this letter to the test site administrator, along with a photo ID, prior to testing. The ATT Letter will be sent to your e-mail address on file and activated in your RID account. You will have access to it by logging into your account and clicking on “Download ATT Letter” in the yellow tile titled “Certification Application Status.”

Your ATT Letter is your proof of eligibility to take the exam. It is recommended you have your ATT Letter before completing the application to CASLI. If you have satisfied the educational requirements and do not have the ATT letter, please contact for assistance.

If you have paid for but have not yet scheduled an appointment for the NIC Interview and Performance Exam and decide you no longer wish to take the exam, upon request, CASLI will refund your payment or credit the exam fee to your CASLI account. A $40 non-refundable application processing fee will be applied to for refund request within two (2) years of the paid date. After two (2) years, the exam fee cannot be refunded but can be credited to your account (minus the $40 non-refundable application processing fee) to be applied to other products and/or services.

Please submit your request in writing by email to or by postal mail to: CASLI, Attn: CASLI, 333 Commerce Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Note: Refunds will be processed in the same manner the original payment was made; if you originally paid by check then you will be refunded by check.
